response paper 3

Jeanine Kohlbecker                                                                             October 1, 2011

Mass Media usage has major effects on our society today. Most people have an account on a social network site such as Facebook, Twitter and even MySpace. Facebook is very distracting to people, especially students because we constantly have to be in the loop with the latest gossip and who is dating who, and who is broken up and what teams just won etc. Students are beginning to spend all their time on these sites rather than focusing on homework and studying which is having a negative impact on grades and schoolwork.
Another big distraction is T.V. There are so many different shows and reality shows that students like watching and it is distracting them away from their work. My usage of T.V and Facebook has gone down a lot since last year because my course load has gotten a lot harder and I have a lot more credits to take for my major. I only watch T.V when I’m stressed out or about to go bed because it relaxes me and takes my mind off of things that stress me out. Facebook is a different story. I am on Facebook a lot but sometimes I’m not looking at it, it’s just open on my computer. I use Facebook mainly as a means of communication to talk to my family that lives far away.
I was exposed to a few norms that are typical for our society. Younger children in the generation below me have iPods, Facebook, Cell Phones and T.Vs in their rooms. I remember when I was that young I never had anything like that because cell phones were just becoming popular, there weren’t iPods yet and most people didn’t have televisions in their rooms. These forms of technology are corrupting the youth and the future of America. Kids as young as 11/12 are having sex also because of what they see on T.V and what older people say and how they act around them.
Another norm I was exposed to was how much the use of text messaging effects the way people communicate. Text messages take away people’s ability to carry on a conversation without having to stop and think about what to say first. Students who are right out college tend to have trouble in a job interview because text messaging takes away their ability to carry on an intelligent conversation and be able to answer the interviewers questions correctly and intellectually. Talking on the phone is not much better because people are not talking face to face with someone which is a crucial part of an interview.
Text messages also affect the way students write papers and their grammar in the papers. In text messages it’s easier to abbreviate because there isn’t as much room to spell out words, well this is a bad thing because teenagers start to incorporate those abbreviations into papers they write for school which affects their grade which n the end may affect the college or job that they get in to.  Text messaging and phone calls are beneficial because they keep people in touch with their friends and family but people lose their sense of language and grammar especially through texting.
These norms have affected me by being in the generation where technology keeps changing and people have to get used to new ways of using everything. Although text message lingo doesn’t affect how I write in my paper or even how I speak but sometimes I have a little bit of a slip up at times but I catch myself and fix it right away. I do have to admit though that text messaging does affect how I speak in conversation and I find myself getting more nervous when I have to speak face to face with someone because I have to be able to think quickly on my feet in order to respond to the question.

part of my response paper 2

Jeanine Kohlbecker                                                                 September 25th 2011
Culture shock is feeling uncomfortable in a new surrounding or unfamiliar culture. In my lifetime I can only remember one time that I experienced culture shock. I was in my church youth group for all four years that I was in High School and we used to go to quarterly masses in different churches around the diocese. One of these churches we went to, I don’t remember the name of it, was a full Hispanic parish with Spanish speaking priests and parishioners. The mass was done in all Spanish and I didn’t understand most of it. I took a few years of Spanish in High School but I still couldn’t understand what was being said.
I felt so out of place and uncomfortable because they were all speaking Spanish and not even taking into account that there were people in the crowd who didn’t understand Spanish and only speak English. The people were super nice and it was interesting and definitely a new learning experience but I wish they would have had a little more respect for us who didn’t understand Spanish and maybe added a few pieces in English. Although I couldn’t understand I could still follow along a little bit because I was an altar server for 8 years and have always been around the church so it was a little bit easier but I couldn’t respond because I didn’t know the words in Spanish.

Sociology response 1

Jeanine Kohlbecker                                                                             September 16, 2011
The studying of Sociology will open my mind to new things and I will be able to understand more in depth how the environment works and how people think and react to situations. Using social imagination will help me to fully understand the broad spectrum of people in the society and how to view the society like an outsider. That will let me see our society from a new perspective and maybe allow me to see things more clearly and relate better to the people in our society. I feel that right now people are viewing our society in a negative manner because of how bad the economy has become over the past five years and how much more corrupt the government has become.
The economy is only getting worse because the government keeps spending our well-earned tax money to give themselves and others like them a raise when they could be using it towards repaying the massive debt we are in. Gas prices constantly jump because the manufacturers are getting to be more and more greedy and demanding more money so gas stations have to raise the price so they can afford to pay for the shipments. Studying Sociology will show me ways to deal with these situations and why people act the way they do in times of crisis and panic. Sociologists are beginning to research into these situations to see if they can come up with positive solutions to make the society better.
Sociologists have to use the following perspectives to gain a unique insight into these situations: functionalist perspectives, conflict perspectives, interactionist perspectives and nonverbal communication. Taking this course and studying sociology will help me to be able to deal with issues in and around my environment. I will be able to use what I learn in this class when doing research about important environmental issues and problems as well as in my everyday life activities. Sociologists may perform experiments to test and study the behaviors and reactions of people in that certain area. They might conduct a survey on a particular topic that is controversial to a lot of people just to see people’s reactions and what they would do in certain situations.
My career goal is to be a Physical Therapist but focusing on Sports and concentrating in Aquatic Therapy. Sociology won’t help me very much because they are two completely different topics and two different areas of study. Physical Therapy is strictly a career that focuses on the body and helping people get back to where they were before an injury or surgery and Sociology studies behaviors in humans and their reactions to environmental dilemmas. I could use a few things from sociology to help me like conducting experiments on certain problems that people may be facing and what symptoms come along with that and using some of the perspectives to gain full insight into how my patients are feeling and what they will do to help themselves in further injury prevention.
The only types of issues I may have to deal with are the ways in which I need to deal with the injuries patients have and the best exercises to give them to guarantee a speedy recovery and full regaining of motion from the injured area. If an issue arises that is outside my career I will rely on the Sociologists to come up with a solution to the problem and I will decide from there whether or not I feel like it’s going to work or whether or not it will be effective.
